Welcome back! In my last blog I showed you the basic components of a astrology natal chart. This time I’m going to show you how it all comes together with the help of a celebrity’s chart.

I start a session by looking at your Ascendant, This is the place where the Sun was ascending over the horizon at the moment of your birth. Unlike your Sun Sign which takes 30 days to go through a particular Zodiac Sign, your Ascendant changes Signs every 2 ½ hours. Your Ascendant sets the overall tone of your life. It signifies the physical body and how other people perceive you.

Looking at our celebrity natal chart (above) we see that she is a Cancer Ascendant as seen by the symbol As in the Sign of Cancer. She is the embodiment of Cancer, the Mother of the Zodiac. This tells me she is all about nurturing and caring for others, she has a high degree of empathy and wants to make you feel happy, warm, and secure in her presence. She may also be quite controlling on the more negative end of the spectrum.

In this Chart (above) there is the added element of Venus being conjunct, or side by side, with her Ascendant. Venus is the Planet of what you love and value, she is a signifier of beauty, wealth, harmony, relationships, finances and your talents. When she is conjunct the Ascendant so closely, both at 28 degrees of Cancer, it makes for a very beautiful physical appearance, since the Ascendant is the physical body. People see her as extremely feminine and like the living embodiment of the Goddess Venus. And indeed she is considered to be one of the most beautiful women on Earth. She likes the finer things in life, dressing fashionably, and looking well put together and she expects her partner to do the same.

In our culture, although there is great emphasis put on material things and looks, people are berated for embracing these qualities in themselves. By understanding that Venus is strong in her life this can free her up to own this aspect of herself and not suppress or deny it for the benefit of others. If she is truly overly materialistic then it can also serve to awaken her to the more positive spectrum of Venus’ material nature, to help others who are less fortunate bring stability to their lives. This particular woman is intimately involved in dozens of charities with a focus on childhood poverty and bringing peace to our world; a combination of Venus and Cancer traits.

Astrology can help illuminate more than just who you are, though that is a big part of it, I will cover some of the other ways it can be useful in future blogs. In the meantime, I hope this snippet of an astrology chart reading has helped you to understand how it works. If you have questions please leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer.

Just What Is A Natal Chart Anyway?

This is a common and completely understandable question I get asked frequently so if you’ve been curious come sit with me for a few minutes and I’ll take away some of the mystery for you.

This is a natal chart. It is a snapshot of where the planets were around Earth at the moment you were born. Each of these symbols represents a different archetypal theme that resides, to one degree or another, within each of us. When added all together they form you, your way of looking at the world, and the energetic themes you are likely to both encounter and resonate with throughout your life.

The chart is divided into 12 equal sections, each one representing a different zodiac sign. Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. You may be familiar with what your Sun Sign is, that is the section of the sky where the Sun was when you were born. Your Sun Sign is extremely important but only one piece of a much larger puzzle.

Your chart is then further divided, depending on the time of your birth, into 12 more sections called Houses that interlock over the Signs and add more depth. For example, the 1st House represents your physical body and how others see you, the 4th House indicates your home and family, the 7th your significant other and how you relate to people, and the 10th your career and place in the world.

Within these Signs and Houses are the Planets which add the final layer. The Sun signifies your ego, Venus what you love and value, the Moon how you react emotionally and so on.

Who Are You?

“Be who you are, not who the world wants you to be.” It’s a catchy phrase though easier said than done. To do that you’d have to answer the question…who are you? A frightening query for some, and a life long quest for others. But what if you didn’t have to wonder? What if it were laid out for you in black and white? Helping you to know yourself is a big part of what I do…my favorite part actually.

Perhaps you are skeptical, and maybe even confused about what an Astrologer does. We are either shrouded in mystery or written off as a hoax. In truth I’m a person, just like you, putting my shoes on one at a time…when my toddler isn’t wearing them on her head. Astrology is no greater mystery than any other science, and just because the mechanisms behind how it works are not fully understood doesn’t make it a hoax.

Put in its simplest terms, Astrology is a symbolic language of the psyche and I am an interpreter.

When you were born, at the moment you took your first breath, an energetic imprint was laid upon you that is every bit as unique as your fingerprints. This imprint lines up with where the planets were at that exact moment and we call this snapshot of the sky your natal chart. Each Planet, Sign, and House corresponds to a different archetypal energy within you and their placement is absolutely unique.

When you understand how unique you are and you accept it, comparing yourself to others or trying to live your life through someone else’s eyes becomes unacceptable. The energy you once put into pleasing others or keeping up with the Joneses can be focused inward to embrace the things you like and work on the things you don’t.

A natal chart reading gives you a bird’s eye view of yourself. This view is objective and without judgment. It gives you a solid visual foundation to accept where you are in this moment. The finest road map in the world doesn’t amount to much if you don’t know where you are, right?
